"Ten Alone"

While nearing completion of this painting, I stepped back and looked at it and realized how disconnected the ten figures in this painting are. There is no interaction between any of them, and none of them relate to any of the others, in any way.

I then realized that's the way I kind of feel here in New Mexico. There are people around me, but I'm not relating to, or interacting with, any of them. And that's the sentiment that unconsciously comes through this painting and speaks to me.

"Bird Man in the Desert"

As whimsical as most of my Day of the Dead paintings are, I can see they are still autobiographical and telling. This one is influenced by my fascination with the birdlife here in New Mexico, creatures I never really appreciated or even noticed much while in L.A.

I keep adding more seed feeders to the trees in my backyard, insisting each new one is the last one, because huge flocks now congregate here and last month I watched as a hawk swooped down to my feeders and caught a mourning dove, spending two hours devouring it in my tree.
I started to wonder if I was feeding the birds or feeding the hawks. The hummingbirds are my favorites though, by far. Fascinating beings. Tame to me, mean as hell to each other. And they love taunting Junior, knowing he doesn't stand a chance trying to catch them.

This is titled:

"San Felipe Neri, Albuquerque"

The most famous church in Albuquerque, this is San Felipe Neri in Old Town. Completed in 1793, it replaced the 1706 church that was destroyed by floods and the Comanches.

Like all of my landscapes, it's completely out of scale, off color. and the wrong proportions. Just the way I like it!
